BIRD SHIFT: THE ANTHROPOGENIC ORNITHOLOGY OF NORTH AMERICA

The New Birds Map-Murals

One of the central manifestations of the Bird Shift series are regionally focused map-murals showing birds that have been introduced or migrated in due to human activities and birds that have become extinct or extirpated (locally extinct). In some cases we also include birds that are locally endangered. This ongoing series of map-murals begin with thorough research, always utilizing the expertise of local bird experts.

The birds are represented by waxed watercolor and ink drawings. "New" birds are drawn flying while extinct or extirpated birds are drawn from photographs taken of preserved specimens from bird research collections, primarily the bird collection of the Field Museum in Chicago. Drawings and short descriptive texts about each bird's anthropogenic history are attached to large hand-painted maps.
