A Cubic Foot of Earth I excavated a cubic foot of earth from a suburban back yard in Long Island, NY. I packed the earth sample, in tact, into a wooden box I had constructed and took it back to my studio in Buffalo, NY. Over the next several months I painstakingly sifted and sorted all of the material out of the box. All of the materials were then reassembled into a variety of display objects. The finished installation consists of forty gold-framed "paintings," seven display stands with sorted earth and organic material, two special display boxes containing "rare" specimens, all containers and tools used in the collection and separation of the material, and a hand-made book. 2000
